Field Equipment Maintenance Specialist

About the role

Amentum is hiring a Field Equipment Maintenance Specialist for the US Antarctic Program at McMurdo Station. The role is primarily responsible for the daily operation of the field equipment center, while also helping deliver winter field safety training, supporting the Search and Rescue team and assisting Operations groups going into the field.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain a safe workplace and comply with all Environmental Health and Safety and Quality Assurance requirements.
• Repair, maintain and clean field equipment including sleds, tents, stoves, ice coring equipment and climbing gear.
• Facilitate the winter USAP Field Safety Training program, covering cold weather survival, risk management, radio communications, local weather and basic first aid.
• Take part in the Winter USAP Search and Rescue Team's training and incident response, and possibly assist the Emergency Operations Center during prolonged responses.
• Take part in annual inventory cycle counts and ship-offload activities, and track equipment issued to and returned from sponsored events.
• Operate forklifts, snow machines and tracked vehicles, and operate an industrial sewing machine to repair and fabricate items.
• Lift and move heavy objects and interact professionally with National Science Foundation, military and other agency officials.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED; at least two years of logistics or supply experience, one year of which must include outdoor equipment maintenance.
• Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods, with successful medical, dental, drug screening and background checks (NSF and employer).
• US citizenship required to obtain and maintain facility credentials at this location.
• Valid US driver's license; no clearance required but the site requires it.
• Ability to lift and work outdoors in extreme cold, including climbing in and out of equipment.

Required skills

• Preferred: Bachelor's degree in natural sciences, glacial travel and basic mountaineering experience.
• Preferred: exposure to computerized data management, expedition outfitting, Arctic/Antarctic field work, outdoor education or guiding.
