Job description

About the role

Leidos is seeking a Field Engineering Technician to carry out field inspections of utility poles across New England (CT, MA, NY, NH). This is a full-time, hourly role with hours depending on the availability of work. The technician travels to collect data, measurements and photos of poles, meets with joint pole owners to agree on attachment heights for new third-party attachments, and documents maintenance concerns so that Leidos designers can propose solutions.

Key responsibilities

  • Travel to collect data, field measurements and photos of utility poles, including urban, rural, backyard pole lines, private properties and transmission and distribution rights of way.
  • Meet with joint pole owners to determine appropriate attachment heights for new third-party attachments.
  • Document maintenance concerns identified by the client and gather the data needed for design solutions.
  • Meet weekly goals set by the supervisor and report progress daily; overnight stays may be required depending on workload.
  • Follow Leidos safety procedures and be prepared for significant walking outdoors year-round.

Required profile

  • High school diploma; preferred experience in the power distribution field and/or an AS/BS in engineering or a related STEM field.
  • Prior field work and distribution component identification experience is ideal.
  • Must be local to the area; work locations vary monthly, and hotels with per-diem supplements ($50-$70) are provided for distant sites.
  • Valid driver's license; can drive their own car with mileage reimbursement ($0.725/mi) or use a rented truck/SUV paid by Leidos.
  • Ability to work long days outdoors, in teams and independently, and to meet deadlines.

Required skills

  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Knowledge of NESC standards and client standards is helpful.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

What we offer

  • 16 to 24 hours of training with an experienced field engineer before working alone.
  • Flexible hours, with many technicians working 10-hour days and taking extra days off.
  • Per-diem supplements of $50-$70 for meals during overnight hotel stays.
  • Training in NESC, structural pole modeling, electrical power calculations, GIS design, PDSDLINE, PowerDelivery and project management, plus EIT, PE and PMP pathways and leadership training.
