Faculty Specialist – Agricultural Nutrient Management

About the role

The University of Maryland Extension is seeking a Faculty Specialist to lead its Agricultural Nutrient Management Program. This 12‑month professional‑track position supports statewide training, advisory services, and research translation to help farmers develop nutrient management plans that protect the Chesapeake Bay while enhancing farm profitability.

Key responsibilities

• Develop Extension guidance documents on agricultural nutrient management topics.
• Design and deliver in‑person workshops, including Farmer Training and Certification, How to Write a Nutrient Management Plan, Fundamentals of Nutrient Management, and Practical Experiences of Nutrient Management.
• Assist farmers and private consultants in creating and updating nutrient management plans remotely and on‑site.
• Train, mentor, and certify new ANMP nutrient management advisors.
• Stay current with scientific research and present findings at regional and national conferences.
• Learn, use, and teach nutrient‑management software.
• Participate in professional‑development programs to improve pedagogy.
• Collaborate with UME teams to set statewide priorities and serve on various university committees.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in agronomy, crop science, soil science or a closely related field.
• Relevant work experience in agriculture, nutrient management, or a related area.
• Demonstrated teaching ability and strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work independently, as part of a team, and to lead teams.
• Certification as a Nutrient Management Consultant through the Maryland Department of Agriculture within one year of hire.
