Agricultural Technician Lead

About the role

The Agricultural Technician Lead supports the Facility Manager in daily operations of turfgrass research at the Central Maryland Research and Education Center’s Paint Branch Turfgrass Facility. This position involves hands‑on field work, equipment operation, and interaction with researchers, instructors, and the public.

Key responsibilities

• Perform field tasks such as tilling, planting, fertilizing, spraying, and mowing turfgrass plots.
• Operate, calibrate, and maintain farm tractors, skid steers, sprayers, mowers, and irrigation equipment.
• Carry out routine maintenance of equipment, grounds, and facility structures.
• Assist researchers in implementing research protocols and support instructors with field lab components.
• Provide tours and communicate research findings to the general public.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Turfgrass Science, Agronomy, Soil Science, Horticulture, or a related field (preferred).
• Three years of agricultural research experience using scientific methods.
• Experience managing turfgrass (golf course, sports turf, residential lawn, etc.).
• Ability to work in extreme weather, lift heavy objects, and wear personal protective equipment.
• Valid Maryland Class C non‑commercial driver’s license; Maryland Public Agency Pesticide Applicator’s Certificate (or obtain within 18 months).

Required skills

• Operation and maintenance of farm tractors, skid steers, sprayers, mowers, and irrigation systems.
• Use of scientific methods and laboratory equipment for agricultural research.
• Knowledge of pesticide application and safety procedures.
• Basic mathematics for measurements, calculations, and data recording.
