Executive Director, Physical Plant

About the role

The Executive Director of Physical Plant reports to the Associate Vice President of Finance & Operations and leads a large, multidisciplinary department covering college-wide facilities, physical plant operations, maintenance, custodial and grounds services, capital improvement and related functions across campuses, centers and sites. The role sets priorities, holds people accountable and ensures facilities are welcoming, safe, clean, efficient, sustainable and well maintained.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and manage facilities, physical plant and operations staff, including new construction, major renovations and ongoing maintenance, and oversee performance evaluations, training and hiring recommendations.
• Plan, direct and evaluate major renovations, renewal and replacement, infrastructure improvements, deferred maintenance reduction and project transitions into operations.
• Administer the Capital Improvement Program, including project intake, feasibility assessment and funding coordination, and provide input on master planning, facility condition, space planning and building design.
• Ensure compliance with federal, state and local laws, codes and standards, and coordinate with contractors and vendors on performance, quality, schedule and budget.
• Act as the college's primary facilities liaison, cultivate partnerships with external agencies and communities, and serve on the emergency response team.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in facilities management, construction management, architecture, engineering, business administration, public administration or a closely related field.
• 10 years of progressively responsible experience in facilities management, physical plant, capital planning, construction or engineering, including at least 5 years of leadership or management experience.
• Preferred: Master's degree, experience in higher education, K-12 or another complex multi-site environment.
