Engineering Manager - Bank Accounts

About the role

Mercury's Bank Accounts team builds the foundation for depository accounts, managing money held in Mercury accounts and helping customers move money between them. As Mercury opens its own bank, the team will build much of the foundation needed to manage customer accounts at that scale. The Engineering Manager leads a team of 4 to 8 senior engineers to make the banking core run smoothly.

Key responsibilities

• Lead a team of 4 to 8 senior engineers delivering high-availability banking services.
• Translate company and product direction into clear, measurable team objectives.
• Build a predictable delivery system that makes progress, risks and trade-offs visible.
• Balance customer-facing improvements with platform reliability, operational readiness and long-term maintainability.
• Partner with Product, Design, Risk, Compliance and Operations to make banking products reliable and useful.
• Hire and onboard engineers while keeping a consistent, high-quality interview process.
• Hold the team accountable for responsible use of AI-assisted development, with testing, evaluation, review and production safeguards.
• Give clear feedback and create an environment where engineers can grow technically and in leadership.

Required profile

• Demonstrated ability to lead a technical team.
• Experience building or operating reliable financial, banking, payments or other high-integrity systems.
• Comfortable working across product, policy, infrastructure and operational boundaries.
• Able to turn ambiguous problems into clear decisions, owners and execution plans.
• Strong technical judgment and deep engagement with system design and implementation.
• Experience developing senior engineers and giving them opportunities to lead.
• Care for correctness, reliability, customer experience and operational excellence.

Required skills

• Familiarity with the tech stack (Haskell and TypeScript), or interest in learning it.

What we offer

• Base salary ranging from $200,700 to $250,900 USD for US employees and $189,700 to $237,100 CAD for Canadian employees, depending on experience and location.
