Engineering Assistant I, II, or III – Dallas District

About the role

The Engineering Assistant position supports transportation‑related design, construction, inspection and maintenance activities for the Dallas District. The role includes job rotation, training and continuing education, with the goal of obtaining professional engineering licensure.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and check plans, specifications and estimates (PS&E) and create detailed drawings.
• Collect engineering data on‑site, conduct surveys and assist during emergencies or inclement weather.
• Perform engineering calculations, drafting and design work using automated roadway, structural and hydraulic design programs.
• Review construction plans prepared by consultants and support public involvement through drawings and exhibits.
• Participate in the Engineering Assistant Career Development Program, including job rotation and training.
• For level II, execute advanced design tasks and mentor less‑experienced staff.
• For level III, lead work crews, train junior staff and handle bridge and structural element design.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related science accepted by TX PELS.
• Commitment to pursue professional engineering licensure through training and exams.
• Ability to work independently on assignments and refer unusual issues to a supervising licensed engineer.
• Willingness to engage with local government representatives, contractors and private entities.

Required skills
