Engineer 6 – Highway Safety Engineer

About the role

The Engineer 6 – Highway Safety Engineer serves as the statewide technical expert for Louisiana's Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) and the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP). The role focuses on identifying high‑potential safety improvement locations and developing data‑driven solutions to reduce crashes across the state.

Key responsibilities

• Lead technical implementation of SHSP, HSIP, and related sub‑programs such as the Local Road Safety Program and Safe Routes to Public Places.
• Identify high‑potential safety improvement (PSI) sites, over‑represented crash types, and roadside hazards.
• Conduct Stage 0 studies, develop local road safety plans, and perform systemic safety studies.
• Maintain traffic safety records, support tort reduction initiatives, and oversee the development and implementation of safety projects.
• Collaborate with regional teams to translate statewide action plans into infrastructure, operations, and data‑planning strategies.

Required profile

• Current Louisiana professional engineering license.
• Either two years of licensed engineering experience or six years of professional engineering experience.
• Experience in traffic engineering, highway safety, or transportation planning.
• Willingness to adopt a data‑driven safety approach and educate others on the methodology.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
