Embedded Linux Applications Engineer

About the role

Ammortal is looking for an Embedded Linux Applications Engineer to build application-level software that runs on embedded Linux and interfaces with hardware over serial and bus protocols. The role sits above the firmware and drives the product, with occasional frontend work. It is a full-time hybrid position in the Asheville, NC area (about 2-3 days in the office per week), with a salary of $90,000-$120,000 plus benefits.

Key responsibilities

• Develop features and fixes for Chamber application software on embedded Linux, with guidance from senior engineers
• Learn and contribute to software that communicates with hardware over serial and bus protocols
• Write clean, tested code and take part in code reviews
• Take part in quality assurance to keep the software reliable
• Help investigate and resolve customer issues, escalating when needed
• Assist with maintenance of early-generation Chamber software and contribute to frontend work as needed

Required profile

• 1 to 4+ years of professional software experience
• Required: proficiency in at least one programming language (Go, Python, C, C++, JavaScript or similar) and comfort with Linux and the command line
• Required: experience with Git; basic understanding of the software development lifecycle and testing practices
• Nice to have: degree or coursework in CS, computer or electrical engineering, or equivalent self-taught experience; personal or open-source projects touching hardware, Linux or systems programming; prior internship or early-career role in embedded systems, IoT or backend development

Required skills

• Preferred: exposure to Go or C for systems-level work
• Preferred: familiarity with Debian-based Linux, Bash, Docker, MQTT, serial/bus protocols (Modbus, I2C, SPI, RS-485)
• Nice to have: exposure to Next.js, React, TypeScript, project tracking tools (Asana, Linear, Jira) and AI collaboration tools
