Electrical Engineer

About the role

Root Access is a frontier electronics startup in NYC seeking an Electrical Engineer to own hardware design from concept through prototype to production. You will work directly with the co‑founder/CTO, who holds seven electronics patents, turning product requirements into schematics, circuits, and manufacturable boards.

Key responsibilities

• Drive schematic capture and lead PCB layout, including component selection, footprints, and BOM management.
• Develop and perform circuit simulation and analysis (e.g., SPICE) covering power, signal integrity, timing, and thermal considerations.
• Design power supplies, sensor interfaces, and communication interfaces such as I²C, SPI, UART, USB, and Ethernet.
• Bring up and debug prototypes in the lab using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and other bench equipment.
• Collaborate with firmware, mechanical, verification, and test engineers throughout the development cycle.
• Prepare design documentation, review packages, and support Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and cost‑reduction efforts.
• Support compliance activities (EMC/EMI, safety, regulatory) as designs mature.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience.
• 3+ years of hands‑on electronic circuit and PCB design experience.
• Proficiency with a schematic/PCB design tool (e.g., Altium, Cadence, KiCad).
• Strong foundation in analog and digital fundamentals, power electronics, and high‑speed design.
• Comfortable debugging hardware with standard lab instrumentation.

Required skills

• PCB design tools: Altium, Cadence, KiCad.
• Circuit simulation (SPICE) and analysis.
• Communication protocols: I²C, SPI, UART, USB, Ethernet.
• Lab equipment: oscilloscopes, logic analyzers.
• Scripting for automation (Python).
• Optional: Ansys HFSS, SIwave, Icepak, CST.
