Job description
About the role
A California plaintiff-side litigation firm representing individuals and families in elder abuse, medical malpractice, nursing home negligence, wrongful death and complex personal injury matters is hiring a Litigation Legal Assistant. The role is hands-on and not general administration: you will work directly with discovery, subpoenas, medical records, court filings, depositions, calendaring and case preparation, managing routine assignments independently under attorney supervision.
Key responsibilities
- Draft responses to Form Interrogatories, Special Interrogatories, Requests for Production and Requests for Admission for attorney review.
- Organize written discovery, medical records, facility records, supporting evidence and document indexes so attorneys can find what they need quickly.
- Track discovery deadlines, outstanding responses, hearings, depositions, mediations and other milestones across multiple active matters.
- Prepare subpoenas, deposition notices, proofs of service and related litigation documents accurately and on schedule.
- Build and maintain medical chronologies and organized case records covering treatment history and key facts.
- Coordinate medical record collection, expert reviews, depositions and communications with clients, opposing counsel, healthcare providers, process servers and expert witnesses.
- Support California service of process, including personal service, substituted service, summonses and complaints, and track proofs of service.
- Assist with California electronic court filings and keep electronic litigation files, correspondence and exhibits accurate.
- Help prepare cases for mediation and trial, organizing exhibits, witness information and medical evidence.
Required profile
- At least 2 years of hands-on California civil litigation experience.
- Practical experience assisting with written discovery responses for attorney review.
- Working knowledge of California litigation procedures, including court calendaring, electronic filing, subpoenas, depositions and service of process.
- Ability to distinguish expert witness testimony from lay witness testimony and support related preparation.
- Strong written and verbal English accurate enough for legal documents and deadline-sensitive work.
- Redacted legal writing sample personally drafted, preferably a discovery response, pleading or other litigation document.
- Nice to have: plaintiff-side experience in elder abuse, medical malpractice, nursing home negligence, wrongful death or complex personal injury; familiarity with medical terminology, healthcare records and the California Elder Abuse and Dependent Adult Civil Protection Act; legal education or formal legal studies; experience with Litify or a similar case management platform.
Required skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat.
- Legal case management or document management systems.
