Division Director – Intelligent Human-Machine Systems (IHMS)

About the role

The Applied Research Laboratory for Intelligence & Security (ARLIS) at the University of Maryland seeks a Division Director to lead the Intelligent Human-Machine Systems (IHMS) Division. This senior role will shape the future of human‑machine collaboration for mission‑critical national‑security applications.

Key responsibilities

• Provide overall leadership, vision, and strategic planning for the IHMS Division.
• Lead and mentor a multidisciplinary team of researchers, engineers, and developers across AI, human systems, and social sciences.
• Manage a portfolio of government‑sponsored R&D programs, ensuring high‑quality technical outcomes on schedule and within budget.
• Build and sustain relationships with key government sponsors, including the Department of War and Intelligence Community stakeholders.
• Drive business development by identifying new opportunities and shaping proposals.

Required profile

• Proven experience directing interdisciplinary research teams in AI, autonomy, and human performance.
• Demonstrated success managing large, government‑funded research portfolios.
• Strong track record of collaboration with federal agencies, industry partners, and academic institutions.
• Excellent leadership, communication, and strategic planning abilities.
