Director of Internal Audit

About the role

Virginia Farm Bureau is seeking a highly credentialed Director of Internal Audit to lead independent assurance and advisory functions across its diversified enterprise, which includes not‑for‑profit, property & casualty insurance, healthcare, and public event operations. This senior leadership position reports functionally to the Board Audit Committee and works closely with the Chief Risk Officer.

Key responsibilities

• Serve as primary liaison to the Board Audit Committee, preparing audit plans, reports, dashboards, and executive summaries.
• Maintain independence and objectivity in line with IIA Global Internal Audit Standards.
• Develop and execute a risk‑based audit plan covering insurance, health, nonprofit, and entertainment operations.
• Assess compliance with state insurance laws, regulatory exams, rate filings, and underwriting controls.
• Evaluate governance, internal controls, and financial stewardship for nonprofit entities.
• Partner with the CRO to align audit activities with the enterprise risk management framework while preserving audit independence.
• Oversee financial, operational, compliance, IT, and cybersecurity audits and report findings to senior leadership and the Audit Committee.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in internal audit leadership within diversified enterprises.
• Demonstrated ability to maintain independence and provide objective assurance.
• Strong knowledge of insurance regulatory requirements, nonprofit governance, and risk management.
• Proven track record of communicating audit results to boards and senior executives.
