Director of Internal Audit

About the role

The Virginia Farm Bureau seeks a seasoned Director of Internal Audit to lead independent assurance and advisory functions across its diversified enterprise, which includes not‑for‑profit, property & casualty insurance, healthcare, and public event operations. This senior leadership position reports functionally to the Board Audit Committee and works closely with the Chief Risk Officer.

Key responsibilities

• Serve as primary liaison to the Board Audit Committee, preparing audit plans, reports, dashboards, and executive summaries.
• Develop and execute a risk‑based audit plan covering insurance, health, nonprofit, and entertainment/venue operations.
• Assess compliance with state insurance laws, regulatory exams, rate/form filings, and underwriting controls.
• Evaluate governance, internal controls, and financial stewardship for nonprofit entities, ensuring tax‑exempt purpose compliance and proper use of restricted funds.
• Partner with the CRO to align audit activities with the enterprise risk management framework while preserving audit independence.
• Oversee financial, operational, compliance, IT, and cybersecurity audits and report findings to senior leadership and the Audit Committee.

Required profile

• Extensive experience leading internal audit functions in diversified organizations.
• Demonstrated ability to maintain independence and objectivity in line with IIA standards.
• Strong knowledge of insurance, healthcare, and nonprofit regulatory environments.
• Proven track record of interacting directly with board committees and senior executives.
