Director of Campus Security

About the role

The Director of Campus Security leads the public safety function for Western University of Health Sciences. Reporting to the Senior Vice President & COO, this armed position sets strategic vision, protects facilities, assets and people, and oversees both internal and contract security staff.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, implement and manage comprehensive public safety programs and procedures.
• Supervise Campus Security Clerk, officers, public safety officers, and regional security managers.
• Oversee contract security personnel and ensure compliance with federal, state and campus regulations.
• Conduct formal investigations, gather evidence and prepare documentation for civil or criminal proceedings.
• Maintain and evaluate security technology including surveillance cameras and access control systems.
• Collaborate with students, faculty and staff to promote a safe campus environment.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in public safety or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• Current or retired sworn peace officer with at least 10 years of experience, including 5 years in a supervisory role.
• Valid BSIS Firearms Permit (or ability to obtain) and California Concealed Weapons Permit if carrying a concealed weapon.
• Valid California driver’s license.

Required skills

• Knowledge of the Jeanne Clery Act and relevant federal and California legislation.
• Understanding of public safety operations, powers of arrest, use‑of‑force policies and free‑speech considerations.
• Proficiency with security technology such as surveillance cameras and access control systems.
• Advanced computer skills in Microsoft Word and Excel.
