Director of Accounting (Contract-to-Hire)

About the role

The organization is seeking a Director of Accounting to lead its accounting function during a transition period. This contract-to-hire position will initially work alongside an external accounting consultant and will gradually assume full ownership of the finance team and processes.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the monthly close, general ledger maintenance, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
• Provide hands‑on accounting support to fill current staffing gaps.
• Assess the accounting team, conduct performance reviews, and identify training or staffing needs.
• Address underperformance and recommend organizational changes as needed.
• Maximize the use of Workday, driving process improvements and automation.
• Support external audits and ensure compliance with GAAP and relevant regulations.
• Partner closely with the interim CFO and cross‑functional stakeholders.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business.
• 8‑10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership roles.
• Proven ability to manage and develop accounting teams.
• Strong knowledge of GAAP and month‑end close procedures.
• Experience in a Workday financial environment (required).
• CPA designation preferred; nonprofit or mission‑driven experience a plus.
