Deputy Fire Marshal

About the role

The Deputy Fire Marshal (DFM) supports the Hanford Fire Marshal's Office by applying fire protection principles and ensuring compliance with Department of Energy directives, NFPA standards, and contractor requirements. This senior position involves reviewing permits, plans, and fire system documentation to safeguard the facility.

Key responsibilities

• Enforce compliance with DOE fire protection directives, NFPA 1, and related standards.
• Issue and approve Hanford Fire Marshal permits for work initiation or suspension.
• Review and approve fire system plans, drawings, specifications, and water supply designs.
• Process exemptions, equivalencies, and non‑emergency hydrant tie‑in permits.
• Prepare fire system deactivation analyses and coordinate acceptance test procedures.
• Elevate unresolved fire protection findings to senior management.
• Support policy development, interpretation clarification requests, and fire protection enforcement.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection, Safety, Engineering, or a related field.
• Minimum 10 years of relevant experience or an equivalent education/experience mix.
• Current Deputy Fire Marshal certification or ability to obtain it within 12 months.
• In‑depth knowledge of NFPA codes, DOE orders, and fire protection standards.
• Strong communication, interpersonal, and computer skills.
• Eligibility to obtain and maintain a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) badge.
