Cytology Technologist

About the role

The University of Miami Health Laboratories is seeking a full‑time Cytology Technologist to join its Anatomic Pathology Operations Department in Miami, FL. The technologist will perform microscopic evaluation of gynecologic and non‑gynecologic cytology specimens, supporting accurate diagnosis and high‑quality patient care.

Key responsibilities

• Screen and interpret cytology slides (GYN and non‑GYN) using established diagnostic criteria.
• Identify abnormal cells and refer cases to the pathologist per laboratory protocols.
• Assist with fine‑needle aspiration (FNA) procedures, including specimen collection, adequacy assessment, and slide preparation.
• Maintain compliance with CAP, CLIA, and state regulations; participate in QC/QA programs and proficiency testing.
• Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot cytology instruments and laboratory information systems.
• Document and report findings accurately in the LIS while adhering to safety and confidentiality policies.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and completion of an accredited Cytotechnology program.
• Valid Florida Clinical Laboratory Technologist license.
• Minimum one year of experience in cytology screening.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently.

Required skills

• Microscopic evaluation of cytology specimens.
• Fine‑needle aspiration (FNA) adequacy assessment.
• Familiarity with molecular testing workflows (e.g., HPV, ThyroSeq).
• Use of Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and cytology instrumentation.
• Knowledge of CAP and CLIA regulatory standards.
