Custodian (Level 1 or 2) – Residential Services

About the role

The Custodian (Level 1 or 2) works as part of a dedicated crew supporting LSU Residential Life. The position maintains over 1.9 million square feet of residence halls and apartments, serving more than 5,000 students and interacting frequently with staff, students, and the public.

Key responsibilities

• Clean residence hall lobbies, bathrooms, hallways and assigned areas (sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, dusting, polishing).
• Empty trash and recycling, handle bio‑hazardous waste, and decontaminate waste containers.
• Strip, wax, and polish floors using industrial mops and commercial floor machines.
• Operate wet/dry vacuums, carpet extraction equipment, flood pumps and other commercial cleaning tools.
• Wash building exteriors, windows, walls, steps and sidewalks with power washers and pressure sprayers.
• Unlock and lock campus buildings, manage security of assigned keys, and set up furniture for special events.

Required profile

• Ability to work safely with hazardous materials and follow written standards for recycling.
• High degree of public contact and interaction with students, staff, and visitors.
• Responsibility for key security and building access.

Required skills

• Operation of wet/dry vacuum equipment.
• Carpet extraction and floor stripping/waxing techniques.
• Use of power washers, pressure sprayers, and commercial window‑washing tools.
• Handling and disposal of bio‑hazardous waste.
