Custodian 1 or 2

About the role

The Custodian 1 or 2 provides essential cleaning and maintenance services for LSU Residential Life, covering more than 1,900,000 square feet of residence halls and apartments that house over 5,000 students. The role involves routine cleaning, waste handling, floor care, exterior washing, and building security within a high‑contact campus environment.

Key responsibilities

• Clean residence hall lobbies, bathrooms, hallways, and other assigned areas by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, dusting and polishing (30%).
• Empty trash and recycling containers, transport waste, and manage bio‑hazardous waste disposal (20%).
• Strip, wax, and polish floors using industrial‑size mops and commercial floor machines (10%).
• Operate wet/dry vacuums, carpet extraction equipment, flood pumps, and other commercial equipment for water removal and carpet cleaning (10%).
• Wash building exteriors, windows, walls, steps and sidewalks using power washers and related equipment (10%).
• Unlock and lock campus buildings, manage assigned keys and ensure their security (10%).
• Set up tables, chairs, partitions, and signage for special events and may rearrange office furniture as needed (remaining duties).

Required profile

• Comfortable with frequent public interaction and high‑visibility work.
• Ability to work safely around or handle hazardous and bio‑hazardous materials.
• Strong attention to detail and physical stamina for repetitive cleaning tasks.
• Responsible handling of building and master keys.

Required skills

• Operating commercial floor machines (stripping, waxing, polishing).
• Using wet/dry vacuum and carpet extraction equipment.
• Operating flood pumps and water‑removal equipment.
• Using power washers and commercial window‑washing tools.
• Mixing and diluting cleaning solutions to correct concentrations.
• Handling and decontaminating bio‑hazardous waste.
