Correctional Lieutenant

About the role

The Correctional Lieutenant is responsible for overseeing the security operations of an adult state correctional facility. This full‑time, onsite position ensures the safety of staff, inmates, and the public by managing daily security activities and emergency response efforts.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate and supervise correctional security functions across assigned shifts or units.
• Act as shift supervisor or chief of security, overseeing first‑level supervisors and security personnel.
• Lead the correctional emergency response team, schedule training exercises, and manage crisis situations.
• Conduct investigations of incidents occurring during assigned shifts.
• Implement and monitor riot, escape, inmate count, and contraband search procedures.
• Prepare daily work schedules, maintain personnel records, and generate administrative reports.
• Inspect staff attire and fitness for duty, and ensure post security standards.
• Liaise with local law‑enforcement agencies and arrange court appearances.
• Participate in institutional policy development and rule formulation.

Required profile

• Demonstrated knowledge of supervisory methods, staffing patterns, and scheduling.
• Experience with correctional security operations, investigations, and emergency response.
• Ability to enforce discipline, maintain records, and produce detailed reports.
• Strong communication skills for coordination with law‑enforcement and institutional staff.
