Controller / Director of Accounting – Commercial Real Estate

About the role

The company, a growing real‑estate investment and property‑management firm, seeks a senior Controller/Director of Accounting to own and evolve its accounting and finance function. This leader will manage day‑to‑day operations, design scalable systems, and support the organization’s next phase of growth.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee accounting and financial reporting for 40+ legal entities and ~100 properties, ensuring accurate property‑level, entity‑level, and consolidated statements.
• Manage monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, including AP/AR, bank reconciliations, intercompany transactions, owner distributions, lender reporting, and cash management.
• Coordinate with external CPAs, tax advisors, auditors, lenders, and investors while maintaining strong internal controls.
• Lead budgeting, forecasting, KPI tracking, and portfolio‑level performance analysis.
• Identify and implement automation, AI‑supported workflows, and technology‑enabled processes to improve reporting speed and accuracy.
• Develop detailed SOPs, process diagrams, and meaningful company KPIs, delivering clear, timely, and actionable financial insights to ownership.

Required profile

• Extensive accounting experience with deep knowledge of real‑estate or property‑management accounting.
• Proven ability to create structure in complex, multi‑entity environments (40+ entities, 100+ properties).
• Strategic thinker who can also dive into tactical details and perform accounting entries when needed.
• Highly organized, process‑driven, and capable of leading a finance team.
• Potential for long‑term leadership and partnership within the organization.
