Control Systems Project Engineer

About the role

We are seeking a Control Systems Project Engineer to join BASF’s Petrochemicals team in Freeport, Texas. The role will act as a senior technical contributor, leading the design, execution and commissioning of control system capital projects that support safe, reliable and sustainable plant operations.

Key responsibilities

• Lead design, execution, and commissioning of control system capital projects, focusing on PLC modernization, replacement and lifecycle management.
• Serve as the technical authority and single point of accountability for project scope, cost, schedule and performance, partnering closely with project managers.
• Develop and implement lifecycle management strategies for aging automation systems, including legacy PLC platforms, while ensuring safe plant operation.
• Apply continuous‑improvement practices to optimize project scope, cost, reliability and long‑term operability.
• Ensure full compliance with environmental, health and safety requirements and promote a strong safety culture.
• Collaborate with engineering, operations, maintenance and peer groups to share best practices and deliver high‑quality technical solutions.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline such as electrical engineering.
• Proven experience in control systems engineering within a petrochemical or similar industrial environment.
• Demonstrated ability to lead complex automation projects from concept through commissioning.
• Strong understanding of safety instrumented systems and distributed control systems.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills to work across multiple functions.
