Community Assistant – Shelter Services

About the role

The New York City Department of Homeless Services is seeking a Community Assistant to support daily operations at its shelter intake facilities. This position ensures a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for clients while assisting with basic service tasks.

Key responsibilities

• Perform housekeeping duties including cleaning restrooms, dormitories, laundry rooms, common areas, kitchens, and cafeterias.
• Remove litter and garbage, restock toiletries, and manage linen distribution.
• Load and unload deliveries, maintain inventory records, and transport supplies and equipment.
• Distribute client mail, organize serving areas, and assist with food service activities.
• Provide client escort services, monitor program activities, and help with crowd control.
• Support other routine tasks related to client services as needed.

Required profile

• No formal education or experience required; ability to follow simple instructions is essential.
• Must be able to understand and communicate effectively in English.

Required skills

• Basic computer proficiency.
• Familiarity with the CARES system.
