CNC Machinist Internship

About the role

Highway Machine Co. (HMC), located about 3 miles south of Princeton, runs a hands-on machinist internship program for high school and college students from the surrounding Indiana counties. The program aims to build a long-term relationship with each intern, giving them training, experience and support throughout their education and career. High school students usually work during the second half of the school day in their final semester, and schedules can be adjusted around trade school or college classes.

What you will learn

• Hands-on machine setups and setup procedures
• Different machining processes and operations
• Reading job packets, including blueprints, travelers, setup drawings and inspection sheets
• Safely handling parts with cranes and forklifts, and using slings, eyebolts and clevises
• Selecting, using and maintaining tooling for machining operations
• Reading and writing basic CNC programs
• Operating machine controls, setting parameters and tool offsets, and performing initial or rough machining
• Preventive maintenance and keeping the work area safe, clean and organized

Required profile

• Currently enrolled in a machining or related technical program
• Basic understanding of blueprint reading and part layout
• Ability to use a tape measure, calipers, OD and ID micrometers
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
• Strong attention to detail and proficiency in basic mathematics
• Understanding of basic machining principles such as milling, turning, feeds and speeds and tooling
• Willingness to learn, ask questions and follow safe work practices
