Clinical Laboratory Assistant 1

About the role

The UHealth Laboratories Department at the University of Miami is seeking a Clinical Laboratory Assistant 1 to support routine operations in both clinical and research labs. This entry‑level position provides hands‑on assistance with specimen handling, processing, and documentation while maintaining a clean, organized work environment.

Key responsibilities

• Receive, sort, and accession patient specimens (urine, stool, swabs, sputum, blood) for testing.
• Transport specimens and communicate test results accurately and promptly.
• Perform specimen processing tasks such as centrifugation, aliquoting, and volume measurement.
• Enter and scan specimen and patient data into the Laboratory Information System (LIS) with precision.
• Maintain inventory levels, perform routine equipment maintenance, and troubleshoot minor issues.
• Keep laboratory files, logs, and work areas clean and orderly.
• Participate in departmental performance‑improvement initiatives.
• Uphold patient confidentiality in accordance with federal and state regulations.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• No prior experience required; ability to learn quickly.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
• Capacity to prioritize tasks under pressure and meet deadlines.
• Willingness to work evenings, nights, and weekends as needed.
• Commitment to university core values and ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
