Civil Engineer Trainee – District 5

About the role

The Civil Engineer Trainee position supports the preparation of final plans and implementation of highway construction projects within District 5. This entry‑level role provides hands‑on experience through a rotational training program across multiple bureaus.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure accuracy and completeness of all assigned work, including measurement, computation and documentation of contract items.
• Provide accurate and timely layout drawings and verify that inspected items meet specifications.
• Keep supervisors informed of any problems or deviations encountered during project work.
• Rotate to other bureaus within the district as part of the training program.
• Perform duties in compliance with departmental safety rules and promote fair treatment of all employees.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from an ABET‑accredited college (or expected graduation within 12 months).
• Current Illinois Engineer Intern Certificate, Professional Engineer license, or Structural Engineer license.

What we offer

• Anticipated starting salary of $4,631 per month, with a full range of $4,631 – $6,323 monthly.
• Full‑time, salaried position with hybrid work schedule (1‑5 days onsite depending on operational needs).
