Certified Surgical Technician (PRN)

About the role

UChicago Medicine AdventHealth is hiring a Certified Surgical Technician for a PRN (as needed) schedule, working 24-hour shifts from 7am to 3:30pm. The role supports the surgeon and the operating room team, keeping the circulating nurse informed throughout procedures and maintaining high standards of care.

Key responsibilities

• Anticipate the surgeon's needs and keep the circulating nurse informed throughout a procedure
• Assemble supplies, equipment and medications before each case
• Monitor aseptic technique across the team and act immediately on any break in technique
• Follow CDC isolation guidelines, use PPE correctly and perform hand hygiene per policy
• Support safe, efficient operating room turnover and direct ancillary personnel
• Report environmental concerns and ensure adherence to regulatory standards
• Supervise team members in the OR and help orient, train and educate new personnel
• Take action in emergencies to protect patients, visitors and staff
• Participate in quality improvement activities and respond to complaints promptly

Required profile

• High school graduate or equivalent; associate degree or technical/vocational school preferred
• Currently enrolled in or has completed an accredited surgical technology program
• 2+ years of technical experience preferred; 1+ year of relevant experience preferred
• Basic Life Support (CPR) certification required
• Ability to work a flexible schedule and work well with multiple team members

Required skills

• Aseptic/sterile technique and knowledge of surgical instrumentation
• Knowledge of common healthcare practices and regulatory requirements
• Basic computer skills and Microsoft Office
• Clear communication, attention to detail, multitasking and keyboarding skills
