Certified Peer Recovery Specialist

About the role
Use your lived experience to inspire hope, support recovery, and help clients build stability. We are seeking a compassionate and dependable Certified Peer Recovery Specialist to provide peer‑based recovery support, skill‑building services, and residential support to individuals with mental health, substance use, or co‑occurring challenges.
Key responsibilities
- Provide one‑on‑one peer support, promote hope, empowerment, resiliency and self‑advocacy.
- Assist clients with recovery planning, goal setting, coping skills and community resource connections.
- Support daily living skills, navigation of housing, employment, legal and benefits systems.
- Maintain a safe residential environment, conduct room checks, document observations and report concerns.
- Complete accurate progress notes and comply with HIPAA, Medicaid and agency documentation standards.
Required profile
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid Maryland Certified Peer Recovery Specialist credential.
- Personal lived experience with recovery from substance use and/or mental health challenges.
- Minimum one year of sustained recovery (preferred).
- At least one year of experience in behavioral health, social services or supportive housing (preferred).
- Pass background check and complete required onboarding and training.
- CPR/First Aid certification (or obtain within 30 days of hire).
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation (preferred).
Required skills
- Strong ability to connect with clients through empathy and lived experience.
- Knowledge of recovery pathways, peer support values and trauma‑informed care.
- Effective communication, active listening and de‑escalation skills.
- Ability to document clearly and accurately in an electronic health record system.
- Dependable, trustworthy, organized and able to work both independently and collaboratively.
