Carpenter - Seasonal Contract (Antarctica)

About the role

Amentum is hiring a seasonal contract Carpenter to support the National Science Foundation's United States Antarctic Program as part of the Antarctic Support Contract (ASC). The position is based at McMurdo Station and involves maintenance and construction work under the supervision of the Carpenter Foreman, PM Coordinator or Facilities Maintenance Supervisor. Tasking depends on prior experience and the ASC schedule.

Key responsibilities

• Perform rough framing and finish carpentry with a variety of materials and tools
• Do construction work in undeveloped, remote areas and in adverse conditions, including outdoors in wind and extreme cold
• Track material usage, update inventory records and coordinate materials with other departments
• Respond to emergency service calls on time, inside and outside normal hours
• Document hours worked, tasks, materials and processes accurately
• Use design drawings, specifications and wiring diagrams, follow SOPs and suggest improvements
• Identify unsafe conditions, hazards and code violations and report them
• Use computer-based labor, material and maintenance tracking applications
• Take part in community programs such as house-mouse, daisy-picking, galley clean-up and recycling, and comply with ESH, waste management and quality assurance requirements
• Deploy to remote research facilities for day trips or longer periods (McMurdo only)

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED
• At least four years of documented carpentry experience, including rough framing and finish carpentry
• Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods
• Successful medical and dental exams, drug screening, background check and federal background check
• Valid US driver's license; US citizenship required to obtain and maintain facility credentials
• Ability to lift and move heavy items and work outdoors in extreme cold

Required skills

• Reading and interpreting design drawings, specifications and diagrams
• Computer experience and willingness to learn labor, inventory and maintenance tracking software
• Preferred: wilderness first responder, wilderness first aid or basic to advanced first aid training (McMurdo summer only); metal stud framing, drywall hanging and finishing, and experience in commercial or industrial construction
