Carpenter Foreman - Winter 2027 (Antarctica)

About the role

Amentum is hiring a Carpenter Foreman for a seasonal contract supporting the National Science Foundation's United States Antarctic Program as part of the Antarctic Support Contract (ASC). The foreman supervises and performs carpentry work on construction and maintenance projects, with tasking based on prior experience and ASC schedule requirements. The position involves outdoor work in extreme cold and may require deployment to remote research facilities.

Key responsibilities

• Supervise carpenters and apprentices and assign duties to subordinate staff
• Perform hands-on carpentry, diagnosis, repair and preventative maintenance on buildings and infrastructure
• Coordinate, supervise and perform field camp construction, maintenance and winterization (McMurdo only)
• Create design drawings and as-built drawings, and prepare schedules, progress and completion reports
• Maintain inventory records, coordinate material and labor support, and help with accurate timecards and charge codes
• Respond to emergency service calls and communicate with the NSF, military and other agency officials
• Follow SOPs, report hazards and job progress, and give performance feedback to staff
• Comply with ASC environmental, safety, health, waste management and quality assurance requirements, and take part in station community programs

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED
• At least 6 years of documented carpentry experience, including rough framing, finish carpentry and design and layout; at least 2 of those years in a lead, foreman or supervisory position
• Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods, with medical, dental, drug screening, background checks and US citizenship (for facility credentials)
• Ability to lift heavy loads, climb in and out of equipment and work outdoors in extreme cold
• Valid US driver's license

Required skills

• Reading and interpreting design drawings, specifications and diagrams
• Intermediate computer skills with MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
• Ability to learn computer-based labor, inventory and maintenance tracking applications
• Preferred: Maximo or other computerized maintenance management system, and wilderness first responder, first aid or basic first aid training (McMurdo summer only)
