Bus Operator

About the role

AC Transit is looking for courteous, customer‑service‑oriented individuals to safely operate its buses. No prior bus operator experience is required; selected candidates will receive a full‑time, comprehensive paid training program to prepare them for a career as a transit driver.

Key responsibilities

• Operate a variety of district vehicles on fixed routes, transporting passengers safely and courteously.
• Move buses between divisions and other district locations as needed.
• Provide customer service, assist passengers with directions, and help those requiring special assistance.
• Perform pre‑trip vehicle inspections, identify safety concerns, and report defects.
• Operate and monitor the computerized fare‑box, electronic head‑sign, doors, and other bus equipment.
• Collect fares, issue transfers, and ensure accurate fare collection for all passenger categories.
• Prepare written reports and incident forms, and communicate with Operations Central Control regarding emergencies, traffic issues, or unusual events.

Required profile

• Dependable and safety‑focused with a strong sense of responsibility.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact positively with the public.
• Willingness to work varied shifts, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends.
• Ability to assist passengers with special needs and follow established safety procedures.

Required skills

• Operation of computerized fare‑box and electronic head‑sign systems.
• Conducting vehicle inspections and basic mechanical awareness of bus components.
