Building Official – Lead, Building Division

About the role

The Building Official leads the Building Division, overseeing plan reviews, inspections, and enforcement to ensure compliance with local, state, and national building codes. This senior role provides technical guidance to inspectors and coordinates with municipal and corporate stakeholders.

Key responsibilities

• Supervise and balance workload for the Building Division staff, ensuring efficient operations.
• Communicate current and changing building codes, monitor trends, and report findings.
• Develop and manage the division budget, handle financial oversight, and produce management reports.
• Facilitate inter‑departmental meetings to achieve division goals.
• Prepare and deliver oral and written reports on compliance and system improvements.
• Evaluate and redesign internal workflows, especially plan review and inspection processes.
• Conduct preliminary plan reviews and complex project inspections, assisting staff in problem resolution.

Required profile

• Minimum B.S. in a related field or equivalent experience.
• At least five years in a supervisory role within building code enforcement.
• Certification by the Miami‑Dade Board of Rules and Appeals or Broward County Board of Rules and Appeals.
• Professional Engineer, Registered Architect, or Certified General Contractor license in Florida.
• Extensive knowledge of the Florida Building Code, Miami‑Dade County Code, NFPA codes, and OSHA standards.
