Biomedical Research Informatics Specialist

About the role

The Biomedical Research Informatics Specialist supports and trains clinical research investigators and their teams in biomedical informatics and data analytics, ensuring the success of research projects at Ochsner Health.

Key responsibilities

• Provide informatics support for research projects, including requirements analysis, design, implementation, and ongoing maintenance.
• Collaborate with information systems and EPIC teams to identify and implement network, database, and hardware/software solutions, especially for patient recruitment to clinical trials.
• Design, evaluate, and report on informatics methods and tools, presenting findings at conferences or in peer‑reviewed journals.
• Educate internal and external partners on informatics methodologies and contribute to data governance, analytics, and security committees.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in biomedical informatics or computer science (PhD or MD/DO preferred).
• At least 3 years of professional experience in biomedical informatics, large‑scale data mining, and relational databases.
• Strong written and oral communication skills, able to produce technical documents and present to diverse audiences.
• Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, and travel within the state as needed.

Required skills

• Programming languages: Perl, Python, Java.
• Database systems: MySQL, MSSS, Oracle, DB2, RedCap.
• Statistical analysis tools: R, SPSS, SAS.
• Network visualization: Gephi.
• Experience with EPIC user interface and backend.
