AI/ML Back-end Engineer

About the role

The Back-End Engineer will design, develop, and maintain server‑side components of conversational AI and automation applications for Ochsner Health, ensuring secure, high‑performance services that integrate with front‑end systems, scheduling platforms, and the electronic health record.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain server‑side services, APIs, and system architecture for AI‑enabled applications.
• Develop and document RESTful APIs and integration endpoints for front‑end engineers, conversational flows, and enterprise systems.
• Manage data storage solutions, server‑side data structures, and create reusable, well‑tested code libraries.
• Implement authentication, authorization, and security controls for a HIPAA‑regulated environment.
• Optimize services for speed, scalability, latency, and stability, and troubleshoot performance issues.
• Collaborate with product managers, QA, integration engineers, and front‑end teams to translate requirements into technical solutions.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
• Minimum 5 years of professional back‑end/server‑side development experience, preferably in healthcare or other regulated environments.
• Demonstrated ability to manage system reliability, uptime, and production stability.
• Experience anticipating and mitigating security and data‑privacy risks.

Required skills

• Python with FastAPI and async frameworks.
• Design and consumption of RESTful APIs.
• Experience with AWS (or other cloud platforms) and modern deployment practices (containers, CI/CD).
• Working knowledge of relational and/or NoSQL databases.
• Familiarity with LLM‑integrated services and agentic architectures.
• Understanding of HIPAA compliance, PHI/PII security controls.
