Bakery Clerk

About the role

Hy-Vee is hiring a Bakery Clerk in its Altoona store. The role keeps the bakery department running smoothly and smells fresh, preparing and replenishing products, assisting customers at the counter and helping create a warm, welcoming experience. The position is hourly and open to people with no prior experience, as training and support are provided.

Key responsibilities

• Greet customers warmly and make them feel welcome in the bakery
• Help customers find products, reach items, carry heavy purchases and take orders at the counter
• Review daily orders and monitor product freshness, appearance and supply levels during the shift
• Prepare, finish and replenish baked goods, pulling product from the cooler or freezer
• Maintain proper sanitation, keeping the work area clean and organized
• Check in product, put it away and review invoices as needed
• Operate the department register to process payments where applicable
• Remove trash promptly and keep the department tidy
• Work with teammates, follow the dress code, hygiene standards and company policies, and help in other store areas and on special projects

Required profile

• No prior experience required; up to six months of similar or related experience preferred
• Less than a high school diploma or equivalent accepted
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and to use basic math for simple addition, subtraction, counting and recording
• Clear communication with customers and teammates, staying organized in a busy bakery
• Physical demands: frequent standing and walking, repetitive reaching and bending, and where applicable, using sharp knives and blades safely

The work takes place in a busy store bakery environment with flour dust, noise, temperature extremes and damp conditions, and exposure to standard bakery equipment, electrical equipment and cleaning products. Training is provided on safety. Employment is contingent on passing a pre-employment drug screen.
