Automotive Mechanic - Full Performance

About the role

The Automotive Mechanic maintains a fleet of vehicles, trucks, buses and tow trucks, and provides technical direction and supervision to developmental contractor personnel. The position requires an active Top Secret/SCI US Government clearance with polygraph, and US citizenship is required to hold that clearance.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate maintenance activities and approve maintenance prioritization, funding levels and office coverage with government staff.
• Oversee shop functions when the supervisor is away and keep customers informed of vehicle status and repairs.
• Execute a preventative maintenance program and perform corrective maintenance and repairs on fleet, training, emergency and heavy equipment vehicles.
• Diagnose and isolate malfunctions, use on-board computer diagnostic systems and test equipment, and inspect vehicles for safety and emissions.
• Purchase parts and services, prepare written estimates of cost and labor time, and recommend repairs or replacements.
• Respond to emergency road calls, tow disabled vehicles, and obtain a Class A CDL with P endorsement within six months to drive a wrecker.
• Maintain a clean, organized shop, comply with OSHA regulations and safety procedures, and make recommendations on shop procedures.

Required profile

• Active TS/SCI clearance with polygraph; US citizenship required to maintain it.
• Five years of experience diagnosing, repairing and maintaining light, medium, heavy and specialized automotive equipment and other heavy equipment.
• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Ability to obtain a Class A CDL with P endorsement and a forklift certification within six months.

Required skills

• Knowledge of vehicle operating systems, diagnostics tools, computer and electrical systems, and diesel mechanics.
• Proficiency with technical manuals, MS Word, Excel and databases, and ability to read and write maintenance logs.
• Experience with welding, simple part fabrication and ASE certifications (ASE master certificate preferred).
