Automation Manufacturing Technology Specialist

About the role

The Automation Manufacturing Technology Specialist provides technical leadership for packaging automation, end‑of‑line systems, and automated material handling across 3M manufacturing sites. The role focuses on developing and deploying automation solutions that improve safety, quality, productivity, and equipment reliability.

Key responsibilities

• Lead technical direction for packaging automation initiatives, evaluating options through data‑driven analysis and engineering judgment.
• Define and review technical requirements, equipment specifications, process scope, layouts, throughput requirements, and acceptance criteria for new or upgraded systems.
• Guide project teams across automation, controls, robotics, vision systems, safety, product handling, labeling, palletizing, and process integration.
• Develop automation solutions such as case erectors, robotic pick‑and‑place, conveyors, case sealing, labeling, vision inspection, palletizing, and automated material movement.
• Support interfaces between packaging automation and end‑of‑line automation, including future AGV/AMR integration and warehouse connectivity.

Required profile

• Proven technical leadership in manufacturing automation projects.
• Experience defining technical requirements and equipment specifications.
• Ability to evaluate technical options using data analysis and risk assessment.
• Collaboration skills to partner with controls, logistics, warehouse, and operations teams.
