Associate Research Scientist – Battery Materials

About the role

The Associate Research Scientist will conduct integrated experimental and theoretical research on the mechano‑electrochemical behavior of battery materials, electrodes, and cells, focusing on Li‑ion batteries and direct recycling of electrodes.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the ARPA‑E project in collaboration with Saint‑Gobain to extend battery lifetime.
• Develop new technologies for lithium extraction and direct recycling of battery electrodes.
• Write proposals for NSF, DOE and other funding agencies.
• Manage lab safety, train students, and oversee basic lab operations.
• Document and disseminate research findings through publications, reports and presentations.

Required profile

• Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, materials science or a closely related field.
• 0–3 years of research experience in battery systems or electrochemical energy storage.
• Knowledge of electrochemistry, chemo‑mechanics and coupled electro‑mechanical phenomena in electrodes.

Required skills

• Fabrication and assembly of battery cells (coin, pouch, cylindrical).
• Electrochemical testing and cycling diagnostics.
• Design and execution of experiments with optical or in‑situ deformation measurement.
• Data analysis, AI‑based analysis and physics‑based modeling (porous electrode theory, single‑particle models).
• Use of computational tools for data analysis or simulation.
