Assistant Public Defender – Appellate Attorney (Attorney 4)

About the role

The Georgia Public Defender Council is seeking an experienced Attorney 4 to join its Appellate Division. This senior‑level position provides high‑quality legal representation to indigent clients on criminal appeals, handling complex appellate matters from research through oral argument.

Key responsibilities

• Independently manage complex appellate cases, including comprehensive legal research and analysis of trial records.
• Draft persuasive appellate briefs, motions for new trial, and other court filings.
• Present oral arguments before Georgia appellate courts.
• Maintain strict filing deadlines and manage multiple cases simultaneously.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required profile

• Active member in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia (or eligibility to become licensed within one year).
• Juris Doctorate from an accredited institution.
• Three (3) years of relevant legal experience, including experience at the lower‑level Attorney 3 level.
• Demonstrated sound legal judgment and ability to handle high‑impact appellate matters.
