Assistant Professor of Philosophy (tenure‑track)

About the role

The Department of Philosophy at Carleton College seeks a tenure‑track Assistant Professor to join its faculty starting September 1, 2027. The position emphasizes scholarship and teaching in areas such as philosophy of computing, AI ethics, technology, data science, logic, and formal epistemology.

Key responsibilities

• Teach five courses per year on a trimester calendar, with a reduced load of four courses in the first year.
• Develop and deliver introductory and advanced courses that attract philosophy majors and students from other disciplines interested in technological and data‑related philosophical issues.
• Engage in high‑quality research and publish in relevant scholarly venues.
• Participate in departmental colloquia, joint events with St. Olaf College, and interdisciplinary collaborations across campus.
• Contribute to the department’s community through mentorship, service, and outreach.

Required profile

• PhD in Philosophy (or a closely related field) completed before the start date.
• Potential for strong scholarly output in the specified areas of interest.
• Commitment to excellent teaching in a liberal‑arts environment.
• Willingness to engage with diverse student populations and interdisciplinary programs.

Required skills

• Expertise in philosophy of computing, AI ethics, philosophy of technology, philosophy of data science, or related fields.
• Strong background in logic and/or formal epistemology.
