Assistant Professor of Petroleum Engineering – Drilling Engineering

About the role

Texas A&M International University seeks an Assistant Professor in Petroleum Engineering with a focus on Drilling Engineering to join its School of Engineering starting Fall 2027. This tenure‑track, nine‑month position includes a reduced teaching load to support the development of an independent, externally funded research program.

Key responsibilities

• Establish and lead an externally funded research program in drilling engineering.
• Teach drilling engineering courses and associated laboratories, including use of drilling simulation equipment.
• Mentor undergraduate and graduate student research projects and senior design teams.
• Contribute to other petroleum and engineering courses as needed.
• Support recruitment, accreditation activities, and school service.
• Develop collaborations with academic, industry, and government partners.

Required profile

• Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering or a closely related discipline by the start date (candidates near completion may be considered).
• Demonstrated expertise in drilling engineering through research, scholarship, or professional experience.
• Ability to teach drilling engineering courses and labs, mentor students, and secure external research funding.
• Experience or potential to develop industry and government partnerships.

Required skills

• Drilling engineering knowledge (fluids and cementing, well planning and design, managed‑pressure or underbalanced drilling, well integrity, lost‑circulation control, drilling optimization).
• Experience with drilling simulation equipment.
• Familiarity with emerging subsurface‑energy applications such as geothermal, carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), and hydrogen storage.
