Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering – Geotechnical Focus

About the role

Texas A&M International University seeks a tenure‑track Assistant Professor in Civil Engineering with a specialization in Geotechnical Engineering to start in Fall 2027. The position supports research development with a reduced teaching load and requires regular on‑campus presence.

Key responsibilities

• Establish an independent, externally funded research program in geotechnical engineering.
• Develop and contribute to the School’s geotechnical engineering laboratory.
• Teach undergraduate courses and labs covering geotechnical engineering, foundation design, and slopes/retaining structures.
• Mentor student research projects and senior design teams.
• Participate in recruitment, ABET accreditation preparation, and departmental service.

Required profile

• Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or a closely related field by the start date (candidates near completion considered).
• Demonstrated expertise in geotechnical engineering through research, scholarship, or professional experience.
• Ability to teach lectures and laboratories in geotechnical topics and to mentor student research.
• Potential to obtain Professional Engineer licensure (PE) or progress toward it.

• Advanced site characterization and field monitoring.
• Shallow and deep foundations, soil‑structure interaction.
• Sustainable or bio‑mediated ground improvement, geosynthetics.
• Climate‑resilient geotechnics (unsaturated soils, slopes, erosion, geohazards).
• Energy geotechnics.
• Computational and data‑driven geomechanics, including AI/ML and digital twins.
