Assistant Cook

About the role

The Assistant Cook supports the Head Start and Early Head Start nutrition program by preparing, serving, and transporting meals for infants, toddlers, and preschool children. Working under the guidance of the Head Cook and a registered dietician, you will help ensure meals meet USDA/CACFP standards and the specific dietary needs of each child.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and serve meals and snacks according to approved menus and standardized recipes.
• Assist with ordering, receiving, and inventory control of food items.
• Transport meals safely to satellite program sites.
• Maintain strict cleanliness and compliance with health and food‑safety codes.
• Support children with special dietary requirements, medical issues, or disabilities.
• Help supervise volunteer assistants when workload requires.
• Document production and maintain CACFP records.

Required profile

• Experience in food preparation for children, preferably in an early‑childhood or school setting.
• Familiarity with USDA, CACFP, and Head Start nutrition guidelines.
• Ability to follow safety, sanitation, and state regulations.
• Willingness to work in multiple kitchen locations as needed.

Required skills

• Food safety compliance (USDA/CACFP standards).
• Inventory management and basic record‑keeping.
