Assistant Attorney General - Tax

About the role

The State of Georgia’s Office of the Attorney General is seeking an Assistant Attorney General to join the Tax Services section of the Commercial Transactions and Litigation Division. The attorney will represent the Georgia Department of Revenue, advise on tax statutes, and handle related litigation and appeals in state and federal courts.

Key responsibilities

• Litigate tax‑related cases, including appearing in hearings, trials, and appeals before state and federal courts.
• Prepare and file pleadings, motions, briefs, and discovery responses.
• Conduct legal research, draft memoranda, formal opinions, and settlement negotiations.
• Represent clients in depositions, interview witnesses, and retain expert witnesses as needed.
• Provide legal advice to state agencies on sales, income, property, vehicle title, alcohol, and tobacco tax matters.
• Attend client, board, departmental, and division meetings and required continuing legal education seminars.
• Travel as required to fulfill case and representation duties.

Required profile

• Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.
• Active member in good standing of the Georgia Bar.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to manage a varied caseload and work independently.
