Application Engineer

About the role

3M is seeking an Application Engineer to join the optical connector portfolio team. You will work with global colleagues to develop, test, and support fiber‑optic products, ensuring they meet performance and quality standards.

Key responsibilities

• Lead small technician teams to execute test plans and generate reports.
• Develop and document test methods, prepare samples, conduct tests, and analyse results.
• Collaborate with manufacturing groups on projects aimed at improving production processes.
• Write SOPs and public‑facing white papers on fiber‑optic product performance.
• Support new product development and maintain existing platforms.
• Validate technical claims in published literature with test data.
• Engage with marketing and business teams to interface with customers worldwide.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Optics, Electrical Engineering or related field (completed before start).
• At least three years of application engineering or product support experience in a private, public, government or military setting.
• Additional qualifications such as a Master’s in optical science, mechanical engineering or physics are advantageous.
• Demonstrated technical experience (up to ten years) in fiber‑optic product engineering.
