Appellate Attorney (Attorney 4) – Georgia Public Defender Council

About the role

The Georgia Public Defender Council’s Appellate Division is seeking an experienced Appellate Attorney (Assistant Public Defender 4) to provide high‑quality representation for indigent clients and to support the division’s leadership.

Key responsibilities

• Independently manage complex appellate cases, including reviewing trial records, conducting legal research, and developing strategy.
• Draft briefs, motions, and other appellate documents and present oral arguments.
• Review the work of other appellate attorneys, provide feedback, and mentor new attorneys.
• Assist the Appellate Director with oversight, training, and division management.
• Maintain extensive reading and organizational standards required for appellate litigation.

Required profile

• Juris Doctor from an accredited institution.
• License to practice law in Georgia or eligibility to sit for the Georgia Bar within one year of hiring.
• At least three years of relevant legal experience or equivalent experience at the Attorney 3 level.
• Current member in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia.
