Animal Care Technician

About the role

The University of Miami’s Division of Veterinary Resources is seeking a full‑time Animal Care Technician to provide daily husbandry and support for research animals on the Medical Campus. The role involves maintaining animal health, welfare, and facility standards while assisting veterinary and research staff.

Key responsibilities

• Observe, feed, water, and enrich a variety of species, including non‑human primates.
• Monitor and record room light cycles, temperature, and humidity daily.
• Sanitize cages, equipment, and biosafety hoods; operate autoclaves for sterilization.
• Receive and house animals and supplies from vendors according to SOPs.
• Assist with sample collection, medication administration, and treatment of sick animals.
• Maintain ventilated cage rack filters and perform preventive maintenance.
• Report facility issues and participate in the Emergency Response Team as essential personnel.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent; additional training in animal care preferred.
• Experience working with laboratory animals, especially non‑human primates.
• Ability to follow standard operating procedures and maintain accurate records.
• Commitment to animal welfare and safety protocols.

Required skills

• Animal husbandry and welfare monitoring.
• Autoclave operation and sterilization techniques.
• Ventilated cage rack maintenance and filter replacement.
• Cleaning and maintenance of biosafety hoods and change stations.
