Air Conditioning Technician I

About the role

Abilene Christian University (ACU) is hiring an Air Conditioning Technician I in Abilene. The position falls under the Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing directorate and covers maintenance and repair of heating, air conditioning and ventilation systems, as well as work on remodeling and construction projects. ACU is affiliated with the fellowship of the Church of Christ and the position requires the employee to be a professing Christian and willing to support the university's Christian mission.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain and repair air conditioning equipment of reciprocating and centrifugal types, including motors, controls, gauges and refrigerant handling and charging.
• Maintain, repair and replace hot water, condenser and chilled water systems, pumps, control valves and cooling towers.
• Maintain fans, heat pumps, fan coil units, rooftop package units, computer room cooling units, humidifiers, filters and thermostats.
• Maintain fume hoods, low-pressure boilers and heating and cooling equipment such as air compressors and air dryers.
• Fabricate tubing and piping for pneumatic control systems and refrigeration, involving soldering, brazing and welding.
• Operate energy management or building automation systems and read gauge readings on equipment.
• Perform minor installation and modification work, estimate materials and coordinate with other trades.
• Inspect work sites for safety and to prevent equipment outages.
• Improve system efficiencies, indoor air quality and energy conservation.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED.
• At least five years of experience in the HVAC trade preferred.
• Knowledge of refrigeration theory and calculation of heating and cooling loads with capacities.
• US EPA "Universal" certification for handling and disposal of refrigerant.
• Honest, responsible, trustworthy, dependable and punctual, with a good attitude focused on customer satisfaction.
• Able to lift more than 50 pounds, work in confined spaces and climb ladders or elevated platforms.

Required skills

• Use of hand tools, testing and measuring devices such as wet-dry bulb thermometers, anemometers, leak detectors and multi-meters.
• Reading blueprints, schematic drawings, charts and technical instructions.
• Maintaining equipment inventory and history records.
• Preparing reports and presenting facts clearly, orally and in writing.
