AI Prompt Engineer

About the role

CACI is looking for an AI Prompt Engineer to join a team delivering AI solutions for U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The role applies generative AI and large language models to help frontline personnel access information and make decisions faster, and sits within CACI's Agile Solution Factory. Candidates complete a structured AI Prompt Engineering training program before moving to client-facing work. The position is contingent on funding.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, refine and iterate prompts for generative AI models to get the desired behavior and outputs
• Test prompt variations, analyse results and drive continuous improvement
• Work with multiple groups to integrate prompts that streamline manual processes
• Stay up to date on LLMs, generative AI and prompt engineering advances
• Contribute to model fine-tuning and Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) strategies
• Debug unexpected model behaviour and identify root causes in prompts, models or data

Required profile

• U.S. citizen able to pass a CBP background investigation (felony, drug use and misconduct checks)
• High school diploma or equivalent completed before start
• Available to work onsite in Ashburn, VA and/or Washington, D.C.
• Problem-solving, written and verbal communication, and independent and collaborative work skills

Required skills

• Hands-on experience with LLMs (OpenAI GPT, Llama, Gemini) or other generative AI models
• Programming experience (Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, etc.)
• Prompt engineering (few-shot, chain-of-thought, structured outputs, function calling)
• RAG concepts, embeddings and vector databases
• AI safety awareness (prompt injection, bias, data privacy)
• Agile/Scrum exposure

Desired: software development experience, internships or academic projects. Pay range: $43,900-$87,900.
